Does college matter in NEET UG?? Government vs Private MBBS? How to Select your college?

It does but mostly for the 5.5 years that you are going to spend there. Once you finish your college, you are a Doctor,no matter where you have done your MBBS from.

According to everything I have learnt from my experience,I would like to elaborate some points.

Government VS Private

There is a huge difference in fee structure of a government and a private college. Government college fees on an average is around Rs. 50,000/per annum whereas private college cost you around a crore/seat.

MBBS from a government college will give you higher patient exposure. You’ll get to see all kinds of cases.

Government colleges are better at giving you free hand for minor procedures.

Big City VS Small City

Choose a city that has facilities, where there is online shopping and places to go out and dine.

After a time when the euphoria of selection subsides and you feel stressed about things, you’ll wish you had places to go and hang out with your friends.

Close VS Distant to home

Choose the college which is near to your home vs the one that is far away.

You don't get a lot of official holidays and you will get homesick.Bunks are planned on festivals. This is the time when batch divides into durr wale vs pass wale.

For someone who is visiting home regularly on weekends,a day extra isn't a big thing. But those who are visiting home after months, they learn the value of each day with family. And when you are visiting home and get notices regarding extra classes or when something important comes up,who would wish that your college was somewhere near.

For me there was only one train connecting the two cities.I had to get tatkaal ticket everytime. And it was stressful, not being able to be with family on festivals, when hostel gets empty.Or when you have a reserved train ticket for a date and something comes up and you have to get the tickets cancelled.

Newly established colleges vs the old ones.

Definitely,go for the old ones.

•Newly established institutes mostly have faculty deficit. As there are no PG seats in the beginning, you have Non-PG JRs and I guess that has some impact on the way you are taught in practicals.

•Another major drawback of these newly established colleges is that they sometimes come up with recognition issues. Hey, fail NMC audits and validity of your degree gets doubtful if you are in that year’s passing out batch.

This is something I saw in the news a few days ago-

•Teaching is better in the older colleges. I remember a friend of mine was in Banda when she told me that they skipped entire Neuroanatomy part. Hey, were asked to read it themselves. Hey were the 1st batch of that college.

They had one cadaver for the entire batch. On the other hand, we were taught the same topic in great detail, with lots of cross sections of brain and spinal cords. We had 4 cadavers for our batch.

Here is a cross section of brain and many more specimens, that a college gets only when it has been functional for years.

College Ranking

See the ranking of college, because it’s a direct reflection of the infrastructure, facilities and prestige of college.

So, steps to follow for choosing a college-

Open last year's allotment list, check the colleges allotted at your rank.

Prioritize and make a list of the colleges that fits best in your Venn diagram.
